Microsoft has always said that its Surface RT is selling like hot cakes, thus denying all reports and comments of various analysts who claimed that this device failed to excite.

And yet, the Redmond-based tech giant announced today a $900 million (€685 million) charge for unsold Surface units, so it appears that Microsoft had much higher expectations when it comes to the first tablet in its history.

“For Microsoft’s fiscal year 2013, the company’s revenue, operating income, and diluted earnings per share were $77.85 billion, $26.76 billion, and $2.58 per share. These financial results include a $900 million charge, or a $0.07 per share impact, related to Surface RT inventory adjustments,” the company said today.

Microsoft has recently announced a $150 (€110) price cut for the Surface RT, in an attempt to clear out inventories ahead of the arrival of the second-generation tablet.
