Microsoft has already set February 9 as the date for the commercial release of Surface Pro tablet. However, recent information points that the company has planned a pre-launch event for select guests at the Best Buy shop in New York’s Union Square, on the eve of the official release.

According to Mary Jo Foley, this is not a press event and the guests will be the first ones to have the chance to buy the new product.

Panos Panay, general manager of Surface Team, and members of the Windows team will be on the spot.

Launching products at midnight is not unprecedented in the case of Microsoft, with the Surface RT slate getting the same kind of attention.

The new tablet from Microsoft, which runs Windows 8 Pro OS (so it supports current Windows 7 desktop applications), is available with 64GB and 128GB storage space, and boasts a 10.6-inch ClearType Full HD Display (1920x1080).

It is powered by 3rd Gen Intel Core i5 CPU and 4GB of RAM and includes a full-size USB 3.0 port, microSDXC card slot to extend storage space.

The need for extra space may not seem justified at a first glance, but recent news informs that the device with 64GB actually offers only 23GB to the user, the rest being reserved for the operating system.
