Ever since Panos Panay presented the Surface Pro 3 for the first time in New York on May 20, Microsoft has been promoting the tablet not only as the perfect laptop replacement, but also as the right device for artists who want to draw using the powerful digital pen that comes in the package.

To demonstrate the full capabilities of the Surface Pro 3 and to celebrate the launch in the United Kingdom, Microsoft asked artist James Mylne to recreate some famous portraits using only a tablet, the digital pen, and the company’s very own Fresh Paint app.

Paintings of the Bronte Sisters, William Shakespeare and Dame Christabel Pankhurst were all recreated in no less than 12 hours of work and were on display at the National Portrait Gallery on the day of Surface Pro 3’s launch in the United Kingdom.

"After years of creating art with a ballpoint pen on paper, it's remarkable how quickly I was able to adapt my working style to the Surface Pro 3," the artist who created the digital paintings explained.

"The Pen has many levels of pressure sensitivity, which enabled me to create smooth, precise lines and capture the depth and spirit of each painting."

As you can see for yourselves by clicking the play button in the videos below, it takes a lot of time and talent to draw something similar to this, but there’s no doubt that the Surface Pro 3 comes in handy to artists in search for a new companion.
