As part of the Patch Tuesday cycle, Microsoft rolled out a new firmware update for the Surface Pro 2, its new tablet that runs the full version of Windows 8.1 Pro.

It turns out however that many users are experiencing issues with the update, as an error message pops out just before installation is supposed to begin.

A post on the Microsoft Community forums spotted by Winbeta reveals that many users are actually experiencing similar issues, with Surface Pro 2 models apparently the only ones affected right now.

“Got the updates on todays patch Tuesday, but the firmware update failed to load. Rechecking for an update does not give the opportunity to try and reinstall. Anyone else having this problem? I do notice that my telemetry driver is now loaded. so not sure what is going on here,” one user reported.

Even though it might not come in handy for some beginners, there's already a workaround that requires users to follow some steps to correctly install the firmware update.

First of all, you need to open a Command Prompt window by right-clicking on the Start button and then type NET STOP WUAUSERV.

Secondly, go over to C: > Windows > SoftwareDistribution > DataStore and delete the datastore.edb file.

Next, go over to the Start screen, type “disk cleanup” and launch the built-in utility to clean up system files and Windows software updates. The process should take only a few seconds, depending on your hardware configuration and the number of items to be removed.

Next, reboot your Surface Pro 2 tablet and then launch Windows Update once again.

Users who posted on the Community forums claimed that such a workaround would basically remove all previous firmware leftovers, making it possible to deploy the new version rolled out on Tuesday.
