Hurricane Sandy has left 17 dead in its path, and more than 7 million homes and businesses without power, from North Carolinas to Ohio, the Washington Times reports.

It has been confirmed that at least 16 deaths were caused by the superstorm, five of which occurred in the state of New York.

The states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania incurred 3 casualties to the storm, each. In the town of Moonachie, New Jersey 800 people were evacuated as the state was hit by 80 mph winds, and flooding led to severe landfall.

Two victims of the storm have been registered in the state of Connecticut, while Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia each lost one resident. Of the total number of victims, three were children, with the youngest 8 years old.

A grand total of 7.4 million customers are without power on the East coast at this point, a number that is sure to go up as the storm advances.
