Supermicro Computer, a leading manufacturer of high-performance server systems, has recently announced the introduction of its new 4-watt and 8-watt Server Building Block solutions, designed to leverage the computing power of Intel's low-power Atom processors. According to the company, these new solutions are designed for the embedded industrial PC (IPC) applications and are capable of delivering the best expansion and storage features of any Atom-based platform. Thanks to their low-power specifications and lower level of performance, the latest systems from Supermicro are ideal for storage and network appliances, including print and email servers.

“Bringing the low-power consumption advantages of Atom processors to the server appliance market empowers our customers with energy-saving, quiet solutions that provide flexible expansion and storage features previously unattainable with Atom solutions,” said Charles Liang, president and CEO of Supermicro.

The company has launched two systems, as part of the new lineup, including the X7SLA-L and the X7SLA-H, which are different in terms of technical specifications. The first of the two is built on the Atom 230 processors and consumes only 4W of power, according to the company. It's designed to support up to four SATA ports with RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10, in addition to seven USB 2.0 headers, 2GB of DDR2 memory, Gigabit Ethernet and Intel's integrated GMA 950 graphics chip. Designed for an increased level of performance, the second Atom-based Server Building Block solution is designed on the dual-core Atom 330 processor. This is rated at a power consumption of 8 watts and offers two Gigabit Ethernet ports, five SATA ports and an extra onboard Type A USB 2.0 connector.

In addition to its new Atom-based Server Building Block solutions, Supermicro also announced its SuperServer 5015A and 5035A storage servers. The first boasts an energy-efficient, quiet power supply, two internal hard drives and a full-height, half-length expansion card option. The other Supermicro SuperServer offers support for four hot-swap drive bays and three add-on cards. This one is featured with an 80-Plus Bronze-certified 300-watt power supply for energy-efficient computing.
