We might still be a long way from seeing Wonder Woman in her standalone project on the big screen, but we’re bound to get a female-centered new superhero show very soon. CBS has picked up the new series about Supergirl and ordered a full season of it, TV Line reports.

Plans for the series were announced a couple of weeks ago, when Warner Bros. TV told the media that the DC Comics heroine was finally getting her own show. At the time, a network had not yet signed on to carry the series.

Supergirl is actually Kara Zor-El and she’s another survivor from Krypton. Like Kal-El (Clark Kent / Superman), she has been living on Earth since the destruction of her home planet, learning to master her powers and, at the same time, to cope with the realization that she’s different, which isn’t always perceived as a good thing by humans.

The series will see the “24-year-old Kara decide to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was meant to be,” the trade publication notes.

A premiere date has not been announced yet, but TV Line says that “Supergirl” will be scripted by Ali Adler (“No Ordinary Family”) and Greg Berlanti (“Arrow”) and executive produced by Warner Bros. TV and Sarah Schechter.

Though the new project is getting a lot of media attention right now, fans of “Smallville” know that this isn’t the first time that Supergirl / Kara steps in front of the camera to do some ol’-fashioned superhero crime-fighting: on the popular series, she was played by Laura Vandervoort and had many appearances.

No word if Vandervoort might be tempted to reprise the role for her own spinoff series.
