Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software, invented with the purpose of allowing anyone with an interest to make interactive projects of all kinds.

Since wearables are such a big hit these days, here comes an Arduino project dedicated to smartwatch enthusiasts who don’t want to pay a lot of cash for a serial fancy-looking device.

SuperDuino actually has multiple uses

The new project is called SuperDuino and is in fact a little touchscreen powered by a similarly tiny coin cell battery and with a tiny Arduino-like processor pumping all the juice.

The kit is perfect for building your own smartwatch, but if you stretch the imagination a little bit, you could build other tiny devices too. And unlike main stream intelligent timepieces that sell for whopping prices, you can have the SuperDuino for just $25 / €20.

More than that, you can add a microSD reader, Bluetooth and wireless connectivity to the little Arduino-centric project.

You’re given a few ideas on how to implement SuperDruino, and you can take a look and see what it looks like strapped on your wrist. The mini-display can also act as a sensor or oscilloscope, and even more importantly, it is capable of running the almighty Flappy Bird.

SuperDruino has apparently been designed for education and some other suggested uses for it include temperature and humidity controller, talking clock or digital logic analyzer.

Added Bonus Tutorials will teach users how to setup blinking LEDs and create different colors on RGB LED, Toggle LED by Reading a Push Switch or Control AC Appliances (fan lights and such) using relays.

For those of you who are more technical, the SuperDruino’s specifications include things two 8-bit timer/counters with separate prescaler and compare mode, one 16-bit timer/counter with separate prescaler, compare mode and capture mode and real time counter with separate oscillator.

SuperDruino will start shipping out next year

SuperDruino is currently up gathering funds on Kickstarter, but its initial goal has already been surpassed four times already. And with 22 days to go, the creator of SuperDruino (going by the name of Mohsin Farooq) is sitting on a highly successful campaign.

So if you want to amaze your friends with a unique smartwatch, while at the same time spending almost next to nothing on the device, you can go ahead and visit the Kickstarter page and make a pledge. Delivery for the early bird packages is estimated to start in March-May 2015.
