The newcomer looks in a way similar to DIMM memory modules

There was a time when laptop solid-state drives were similarly designed to those of desktops, but then ultrathins and ultrabooks came out.

So, since 2.5-inch SATA drives didn't cut it anymore, storage makers started to change things around, removing the outer shell and coming up with new form factors and interfaces.

The NGFF SSDs from Super Talent are based on the M.2 form factor, as seen in the photo above.

They measure 22.00 mm x 80.00 mm x 3.5 mm / 0.86 x 3.14 x 0.13 inches.

Yet despite the size, or maybe because of it, they can read and write data at 480 MB/s and 400 MB/s, respectively.

That goes for the NGFF DX1 at least. The NGFF ST1 is even smaller, measuring 22.0 mm x 42.0 mm x 3.5 mm / 0.86 x 1.65 x 0.13 inches. Its performance is of 250 / 80 MB/s, because the SATA II interface is used instead of SATA III.

Since the DX1 comes in 32 GB to 256 GB, the ST1 probably has 16/32 GB. As the press release states, “sufficient storage space to load an OS and serve as a bootable drive for embedded applications.”
