ASUS' vast lineup of Eee PCs is rapidly gaining in popularity, so we are seeing the Taiwanese manufacturer releasing more and more models, based on the same Atom-enabled platform. It is probably because of this that components manufacturers are considering the development of Eee PC-targeted products, which may vary from hardware to different accessories. Super Talent is one such manufacturer, and it has recently introduced a new storage upgrade solution, specifically designed to meet the technical specifications and requirements of the currently existing Eee PCs.
The company's new product is basically a Solid State Drive storage option upgrade that could allow users to extend the storage capacity of their SSD-enabled Eee PCs to a maximum of 64GB. The product lineup includes three versions of Super Talent's mini PCIe SSDs, boasting capacities of 16GB, 32GB and the aforementioned 64GB. Performance-wise, we are looking at an upgrade option that can deliver a max read speed of 40MB/s, while the write speed remains at just 15MB/s.
Super Talent Director of Marketing, Joe James mentioned, “It’s a natural extension of our SSD product range to offer SSDs for popular netbook brands. Solid state storage is ideal for entry level mobile PCs.” As far as pricing and availability go, the new mini PCIe SSDs are sampling now, and aren't expected to enter production until sometime next month. As regards pricing, we are looking at an expected street cost of $53 for the 16GB version, while the higher capacity 32GB SSD will cost $79. The 64GB SSD is expected to sell for about $149.
On one hand, it's nice to see that Eee PC users will have a storage upgrade option for their small-sized, low-power portable computer system. However, the estimated price tag might keep some users away from Super Talent's new SSDs, because the 64GB version will cost them almost half of that they would pay for a new Eee PC netbook.
