The brawler is only available on the 3DS in Japan for the time being, coming to the rest of the world in October

Nintendo has announced that its recently released brawling video game Super Smash Bros. registered 1 million units sold in its opening weekend in Japan.

The figure announced by the Japanese corporation includes both retail and digital download numbers for the fighting game, and considering that it's only available on the Nintendo 3DS, it puts the company in a pretty favorable light.

Granted, the 3DS is the best-selling device in Japan month over month since its release in 2011, so the video game has a rather extensive install base in the country.

The figure, however, comes ahead of the upcoming Nintendo Wii U release of Super Smash Bros., and not many new 3DS releases manage to sell this much in their first week, not even entries from established cross-media franchises.

Other notable hit titles that surpassed the 1 million units milestone during their first week include massively popular Monster Hunter 3 and Pokemon X and Pokemon Y.

Super Smash Bros. is expected in North America and Europe on October 3 and on October 4 in Australasia, on the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming device. The Wii U Version of the fighting game will be released later this year, at a yet undisclosed date.
