Super Smash Bros. might be getting support for up to 8 players in its multiplayer modes, according to the leaked announcement reel.

The game traditionally enables up to four players, each owning a Nintendo 3DS device, to duke it out in multiplayer, and according to the audio files for the game, Nintendo might be looking to implement support for up to eight players.

The way multiplayer clashes work in SSB is not the standard fighting game action that Mortal Kombat, Tekken or Street Fighter has accustomed us to. Instead of diminishing their opponents' health bars, SSB characters increase their damage percentage, knocking them further back with each attack, with the end goal being to knock them out of the playing field entirely.

The complete audio files for the game have made their way to the Internet, and a number of interesting discoveries have been made. The announcer states Boss Battle, Tourney, Yellow Team, Event Match, Grab the Coins, Special Smash, The Champion Is…, Choose a Mii and 8 Player Smash.

For the time being, it's unclear whether these are possible modes that got scrapped before the game's final release, or if they are an indication of the future content Nintendo plans to deliver. In any case, you can hear the audio announcements for yourself by checking out the video below.

Smashing through sales

The Nintendo 3DS version of the brawler was just released last week, and it took the world by storm, selling over 2.8 million units worldwide. Granted, the title sold almost 1.5 million units in Japan alone, where it was launched earlier last month, but nonetheless, it was a smashing success.

Super Smash Bros. is also coming to the Nintendo Wii U home console on November 21 in North America, on December 5 in Europe, and on December 6 in Japan and Australasia.

Interest in the Wii U has rekindled, and both sales numbers and audience perception seem to have improved since last year. The Wii U was launched in November 2012, and the latest figures from Nintendo point to it selling over 7 million units worldwide.

The release of the highly anticipated Mario Kart 8 was a boon for the console, with a major spike being registered around the title's launch. The racing video game managed to sell 2.8 million copies in just over a month, being a veritable system seller for Nintendo.

Super Smash Bros. is expected to have a similar effect, with Wii U sales predicted to surge after the game's release.
