Super Meat Boy, the challenging two-dimensional indie platformer from the appropriately named Team Meat development studio, won't be making its way onto the Nintendo Wii, according to a company update on Twitter.

Team Meat officially revealed on Twitter that plans to release a downloadable version of Super Meat Boy, through the WiiWare online service, have been scrapped.

The chances of seeing the hard platformer as a retail release for the Nintendo console are also pretty slim, according to the same announcement.

"Attention: there will not be a Wiiware version of SMB," the studio said. "We are looking in to retail Wii, bit its also looking grim. still looking though."

Super Meat Boy impressed Xbox 360 owners when it appeared on the Xbox Live Arcade in October, garnering praise for its challenging level design and the fun gameplay mechanics, reminiscent of classic Mario platformers.

A PC version was also released back in November, containing a variety of extra characters instead of the titular Super Meat Boy.

It's not all bad news, as Team Meat did also mention that a big content update would be heading to the existing versions around the middle of January.

This will contain not only a full level editor, which allows users to "create anything they have seen level wise in-game (minus bosses)," but also a Super Meat World, a "chapter that will unlock with 20 bandages and appear on the over world map before the 1st chapter of the main game."

"Many of you know there will never be a sequel to Super Meat Boy, so it was important to close the book in a way that let the fans take over where we left off, giving them complete control over what people play and how super meat boy lives on," said the development studio. "All of this content will be 100% free."
