Gaming is slowly but surely becoming an important part in our daily lives, as more and more people prefer to entertain themselves with a good video game in favor of movies or TV. That is why a lot of respected organizations are acknowledging the important role that video games have had for our current society.

The most recent example is the Guinness association, which is responsible for editing and creating the book of world records every year, which has just released the top 50 most influential games of all time. Although there was a lot of debate concerning this chart, the fact that the association gathered a crack team of industry specialists and analysts in order to create it will make some people more calm.

According to the Guinness World Records, it seems that Super Mario Kart has had the biggest and most long lasting effect on the whole industry and spawned a variety of sequels. That's right, Nintendo's fun racer has defeated all other games and finished in at number one in this chart. The runner up is the famous brick puzzler Tetris, with the original Grand Theft Auto game hot on its heels.

I can't believe this list might even be considered as a reference. It says "influential" but it's only a compilation based on one's personal preference, or maybe the result of a subjective vote at whatever website. There is no justification for at least half of the choices listed herein. Why this order? Why GTA three times, but not GTA 3 the only one that started the whole sandbox thing? Why PGR 4 but not the original Dreamcast's Metropolis Street Racer - which is a better but still questionable choice?

What means influential, and who do you think has been influenced? Certainly not the creators of video games.

I can tell that FF XII, Orange Box, SM Galaxy are certainly good games, but not such references that they would truly deserve to be in this list. FF VII of course has its place, but not FF XII - and where is FF VI? Orange Box is in itself 3 games + 2 extensions, and Half Life 2 is inspired from Golden Eye that really deserves the mention. In the list there are 5 classic super mario platform titles (excluding Kart which is no platform and is an ok choice), but only the original Super Mario Bros and the 64 version are true innovations.

Furthermore, I can't see any Space Invaders, Bubble Bobble, Pong, Arkanoid, Commando ... Why Pro Evolution Soccer 4, and not the good ol' Kick Off? No Sim City, Civilization, Populous... do you hate this genre? No Warcraft, no Fallout... Sonic 2, is it more influential than Sonic? Outrun 2? Not a major addition compared to Outrun. ResEvil IV? The first one does the trick. Same for the original Bomberman: Saturn version was better but not more influential. etc. etc. etc.

Another list, someone?
