In 1996, Nintendo was releasing Super Mario 64 without having the slightest idea that almost 8 years later they would be going to re-release the game as a platinum hit, as a further proof that Mario,
the lead character, has become part of the gaming history and that lots of hardcore fans would do anything to save him.
Super Mario 64 DS was developed, just like the original, by Nintendo EAD as a DS exclusive and it was released on the 21st of November 2004 in North America, the 2nd of December in Japan and the 11th of March 2005 in Europe.
Even though the game was criticized for not being a true remake of the original, because of its much easier levels, Luigi's special move and so on, the game still sold almost 6 million copies to date, being one of the most successful titles ever released. Another proof that you only need Mario in order to sell a product!
