But the game has boosted overall sales for the Wii U console

Super Mario 3D World has managed to sell 106,967 physical copies on the Japanese market during its launch week, which makes it the worst selling title in the series at the moment.

The numbers, quoted by Gamasutra, do not take into account sales that have been conducted via the eShop.

The best first-week sales for the series' games belong to Super Mario 3D Land, which managed to deliver 344,698 copies to gamers, Super Mario Galaxy 2, with sales of 337,569 and Super Mario Sunshine, which stayed competitive with about 280,000.

The launch of the new Mario title did manage to boost overall sales of the Wii U home console, which is positive news from Nintendo.

But if Super Mario 3D World fails to capture the imagination of players in the long term, it’s unlikely that hardware sales will continue to improve.
