Super Grub2 Disk, a tool that can help users get into an operating system that has a broken boot loader, has just reached version 2.01 Beta 1.

If you ever find yourself in the position of being unable to get into your OS because the boot loader has been compromised for some unknown reason, then you have to consider Super Grub2 Disk.

As the name of the tool implies, Super GRUB2 Disk uses GRUB2 and has been developed to take advantage of the new features in GRUB2. The developer has explained that GRUB2, for example, provides a series of advantages, like the ability to boot into Mac OS X or to boot into a system than doesn't feature USB support in Bios.

Users must not misunderstand the purpose of Super GRUB2 Disk, which is not to repair the busted boot loader, although that can be easily fixed, depending on the operating system you are using. In Windows you can rewrite the MBR and in Linux you can always rewrite the GRUB with a single command or with an application.

If you are used to Live CDs that allow users to boot into an operating system without interfering with the existing ones, then you can also consider Super GRUB2 Disk to be a sort of Live boot loader that only intermediates the access to the OS on the hard drive.

The latest version of Super Grub2 Disk released, 2.01 Beta 1, comes with a number of improvements to the interface, but most importantly with a new Everything option. You can easily deduce from the name “Everything” (a name that might change before the release of the final version) that this option can be used to boot into almost anything, by pressing just one key.

Also, the final boot options have been redesigned so that they can be clearly distinguished from the rest, the extra options and the manual options have been placed into a submenu, the new supergrub-meta-mkrescue script has been added for building a number of target & platform combinations, new boot technology based on conditional AFD has been implemented, and the build documentation has been improved.

Super Grub2 Disk 2.01 Beta 1 is a very small tool and weighs only a couple of MB. You can write it on a USB key, CD, and DVD and run it at boot.

Check the official changelog for more details about this release. You can download Super Grub2 Disk 2.01 Beta 1 from Softpedia. Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
