The third-person shooter is coming out at the end of October

Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games has confirmed once again that the upcoming Xbox One exclusive third-person shooter will run at 900p resolution and 30 frames per second.

The information comes from a recent interview with IGN, where the team reiterates the fact that the game is unconventional and exciting enough that the gameplay trumps any kind of golden PR numbers that the gaming community seems to interpret as a benchmark of quality.

Insomniac Games' Ted Price says that the upcoming shooter is not afraid to break many of the long-established rules of the genre, and that it's by far the biggest game that the studio has ever made.

It's not a numbers game

"We're running at 900p and 30 fps native. This is a game with a lot on the screen and we made the choice to be at 900 because we wanted to push the level of detail, action, the size of the city and the views you can experience as move around. What's great about Sunset Overdrive is if you can see it, you can go there," Price explains.

The studio boss says that you can continue playing the game after you reach the end, and it's unlikely that people will be able to unlock everything the first time through.

"It doesn't take itself too seriously and constantly breaks the fourth wall. It presents color as a feature, which we haven't seen a lot recently. It's a new and fresh experience and we hope players understand the language we're speaking and want us to take it further," Price comments.

The mythical 10%

Price also goes into detail regarding the computing resources freed after the unbundling of the Kinect sensor, which held around 10 percent of the GPU hostage at all times.

"What happened for developers not using the Kinect is that there was a slight boost in CPU power that we got to take advantage of. This game really does push the limits when it comes to the number of enemies on screen, so it was useful for us to have more CPU juice to help with physics, navigation and AI," the studio head reveals.

The third-world shooter is a highly stylized take on the genre, with plenty of colorful over-the-top action. Sunset Overdrive introduces a fundamental change in the way shooters are played, since gamers have to be constantly on the move, instead of hiding behind conveniently placed chest-high walls and waiting for enemies to come out of cover.

Sunset Overdrive is slated for an October 28 launch in North America, and an October 31 launch in Europe, headed exclusively to the Xbox One home entertainment system from Microsoft.
