Sunset Overdrive, the upcoming Xbox One exclusive open world shooter, delivers an awesome apocalypse instead of a dark and grim one, at least according to developer Insomniac Games, which wants to trump the trend in entertainment nowadays.

Sunset Overdrive was revealed to the world last year, but only recently did the game receive some actual details about its story, its gameplay, and how it takes advantage of the Xbox One.

Now, Insomniac boss Ted Price has gone a bit more in-depth about the story and how it's quite self-aware, meaning you'll find frequent attempts at breaking the fourth wall and a pretty outlandish plot that takes the whole apocalypse concept and turns it into something way more fun.

According to Price, who has talked with GRTV, lots of games and other types of entertainment feature grim and dark apocalypse scenarios but Insomniac wanted to bring forth an "awesomepocalypse" where things are way more fun.

"The story is very self-aware. And what's fun for us is that it's also driven by what we feel are some important themes. One of which is as a society we seem to have this obsession with end times, right? There has been so many movies, so many games about the apocalypse. And they're usually grim, dark visions of the apocalypse," he says.

"We decided to turn it on its head and make this your 'awesomepocalypse'. What would happen if something horrific happened in your city, well maybe it's actually fun. Maybe you don't have to worry about that dead end job. Maybe you can play your music as loud as you want. Wear what you want and have fun. And that's what a lot of this game is about."

Price also emphasizes that, besides the single-player campaign that consists of a variety of missions scattered throughout the open world, players can also engage with friends in the special cooperative mode called Chaos Squad.

Unlike other games, the co-op action happens in the same open world and its missions are just changed randomly in terms of content and location to keep things fresh.

"It takes place in the same open world that the campaign takes place in," Price says. "So you and seven friends are going on a series of missions that are randomized as your moving through the world."

Sunset Overdrive debuts worldwide on October 28 exclusively for the Xbox One. You can bet that Insomniac and Microsoft are going to share more details about it until then, in order to hype up fans.
