Insomniac Games held a panel yesterday at RTX 2014, showing a ton of gameplay footage from the upcoming Xbox One exclusive third-person shooter Sunset Overdrive, complete with useful commentary from a developer.

The gameplay livestream was recorded by YouTube user Arekkz Gaming, and the video shows a bunch of never-before-seen footage, complete with informative commentary that borders on preachy for a while from Insomniac Games' Brandon Winfrey, revealing some of the intricacies of the shooter's character customization option, as well as weapons, enemies, and the general best way to approach its challenges.

The open-world game encourages a gameplay dynamic very different than that of other shooters, focusing a lot on lateral action and navigating through the environment at a breakneck pace, taking a big step sideways from the usual mantra of taking cover, standing still and carefully aiming for an opponent before moving on to the next one, and generally refraining from going head-first into open areas.

Instead, the way Sunset Overdrive should be played is in constant motion, never standing still, always grinding on a rail or jumping between rooftops, dishing out pain and suffering to the poor mutants around you.

The video also shows a brutal boss fight against the immense mutant brute Herker, an AI-controlled beast that is every bit as nimble and as capable of making use of the environment as you are, so you have to really be on your toes if you don't want to find an untimely end at his humongous, crushing hands.

Over the course of the fight, Winfrey mentions that you have to be careful to select the right tool for the job, as some weapons are better suited to taking out specific opponents, such being the case with the rocket launcher in the video, able to ignite the huge mutant and inflict additional damage.

The footage also shows how the characters can be personalized, as the developer mentioned a while back that everyone was gender neutral, which means that you can dress them up exactly as you would like, and running around with a dude in a tutu is A-OK in their book.

In addition to this, the video also offers a glimpse of the game's control scheme for the first time in recorded history, and you can check it out in the image at the top of this article.

Sunset overdrive is coming out on October 28, 2014, exclusively for Microsoft's next-gen computer entertainment system, the Xbox One.
