Director David Ayer continues to tease fans on Twitter

Warner Bros. seems unable to catch a break with development on its comic book-inspired universe, which kicked off in 2013 with “Man of Steel,” the Superman reboot. Work on next year’s “Suicide Squad” is now underway, and director David Ayer is keeping fans up to speed on social media - but it’s still not enough to silence the haters and the critics.

Some hours ago, Ayer tweeted 2 new photos from the film (see below): an ensemble pic of Task Force X, aka the DC Comics villains working together under governmental orders to keep the peace, and a solo photo of Will Smith in full Deadshot costume.

The ensemble pic includes, from left to right, Slipknot (Adam Beach), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and El Diablo (Jay Hernandez).

It’s meant to be moody and scary, but it’s being heavily ridiculed online. It’s clear that many fans of the original comics have lost interest in the Justice League project with “Man of Steel” and the fact that Warners decided to keep director Zack Snyder around for two more movies.

They’re also unhappy with this dark, ultra-serious direction Warners is going in: whereas Marvel delivers box office hits that are both action-packed / serious and fun, Warners seems bent on sucking all the fun out of its superheroes.

This new photo confirms that. Any darker and toned down the colors on it and it would have been impossible to make out the villains’ faces.

“Suicide Squad” will be out in August 2016, after “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” which drops in March. Jared Leto will play The Joker, and his big reveal was just as negatively welcomed as the entire cast’s.
