“The new Start menu is horrible,” insiders complain

Remember the time when everyone was complaining about Windows 8 and the lack of a Start menu? Well, it's happening again, only that this time people are complaining that the new Start menu integrated into Windows 10 is not at all the option they hoped to get in the new OS.

First of all, a little bit of history. Back in 2012, Microsoft decided to remove the Start menu completely from modern Windows and go for a Start screen which ran in full screen. At first, there wasn't even a Start button, but Microsoft brought it back in Windows 8.1 following a shocking amount of criticism from its users.

In Windows 10 Technical Preview, the company reintroduced the Start menu, but not in the way we knew it, but with a modern touch.

The Start menu now has live tiles, new menus, and an app list that indeed looks like the one in Windows 7 but is fresh and seems to better integrate the new and revamped Windows 10.

Windows 10 build 9926 significantly changed the Start menu and added a full-screen option that basically allows it to become a Start screen with the press of a button. Basically, the Start screen is now the full-screen mode of the Start menu and users can easily switch from one to another in a second.

Feedback against the Start menu

An entry posted via the Windows Feedback app included in Windows 10 build 9926 shows that some users are not at all pleased with the new version of the Start menu. Right now, this is the second most-voted feedback submissions for the Start menu.

“New Start menu is horrible. It is not a Start menu, it is just a Start screen shrunk down. There is no way to organize it. It just presents a flat view of hundreds of shortcuts. I want to be able to set up a hierarchical structure like the Start menu in Windows 7,” the submission reads.

Unfortunately for users not pleased with it, this is very unlikely to change in the coming updates and Microsoft would most likely improve the current design with new features and transparency.

But otherwise, this Start menu is here to stay.
