News has emerged that a submarine that blew up in India, trapping 18 people aboard, has been the scene of an accident before.

Three years ago, it caught on fire killing one person and injuring two others. A 24-year-old crew member died and two more suffered severe burns at the time.

The INS Sindhurakshak is not equipped with escape routes and proper security measures have not been taken to prevent this from happening, according to Rahul Bedi, defense expert with IHS Jane's Defence Weekly.

"They don't have escape routes in the event of accidents unlike some of the modern submarines," he tells ABC.

As I have previously mentioned, all the people aboard during Wednesday's blast are presumed dead. The submarine was built in Russia in 1997 and it was repaired there earlier this year.
