The very first Service Pack for the well known SuSE Linux Enterprise 10 has just been made available once with the new SuSE Linux Enterprise Virtual Machine Driver Pack.

The SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP1 from Novell provides interesting enhancements in the virtualization area, a high-performance computing, reliable security and interoperability and a high quality system management to a very low-cost. The Virtual Machine Driver Pack enables the Windows and Linux guest operating systems to run with near native performance in virtual environments created with the Xen hypervisor technology integrated in SUSE Linux Enterprise and Intel Virtualization Technology and also AMD Virtualization hardware.

Among the enhancements which can be found in the barely-released SP1 of SuSE Linux Enterprise, one will definitely notice the enhanced virtualization support and management and also the support for the new processor technologies such as Quad-Core Intel Xeon or AMD 's Quad -Core Opteron. There can also be counted the security features and the audit subsystem enrichment and support for Novell Open Enterprise Server 2. The expanded OpenOffice.org support and the updated desktop user experience are also worth being mentioned here.

Regarding the VM Driver Pack, this one stands out through the paravirtualization and enterprise-level support offered for a larger area of fully virtualized workloads. Novell is also the first vendor to offer a supported solution for the Xen virtual machine guests.

According to Holger Dyroff, Novell vice president of SUSE Linux Enterprise product management, the enhancements brought to the SP1 and the capabilities offered by the VM Driver Pack "are a direct result of customer feedback and Novell's commitment to meeting their needs".

"SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP1 gives us the opportunity to create cost-effective solutions for our customers who are running different platforms. For example, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server gives us the opportunity to run the same distribution on all our different architectures, while virtualization lets us easily run more than one operating system on the same hardware and move this virtual system around in our data center without downtime. This has been a cost-effective solution for us." said Jan Aril Sigvartsen, CEO of hosting provider WebDeal.
