Styrofoam food containers are documented to cause noteworthy damage to the environment, which is why it can only come as good news that high officials in New York have agreed to ban their use within city limits.

The ban was unanimously voted on this past Thursday, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg is now expected to sign it into law. According to Tree Hugger, he will do so by the end of this year.

The same source tells us that, unless folks who are in the business of manufacturing or using styrofoam food containers on a large scale can prove that such foodware can be recycled and made more environmentally friendly, the ban will take effect in a year's time.

Commenting on New York City's decision to ban the use of food containers made from said material, Christopher Chin with the Center for Oceanic Awareness, Research, and Education, said that, “This is a tremendous decision, and grand victory for us all.”

“Future generations will see this as the obvious choice, but this vote today makes a strong stand and proves that New York is truly ready to make a difference,” he added.
