Twitter is the perfect tool for celebrities looking to reach out to as many fans as possible and thus further expand their brand. As it happens, Twitter can also be their vehicle of public embarrassment, at those times when they have no PR person by their side to filter their words.

With this in mind, Yahoo! has comprised a top 10 of the most embarrassing and stupid things celebrities have said on Twitter in 2012, seeing how we only have so little to go until the New Year.

We’ll include only the top 5 here, but you can see the rest at the link above.

The fifth position goes to a pair of dueling divas, singer LeAnn Rimes and reality star Brandi Glanville, who have Eddie Cibrian in common – whom LeAnn reportedly “stole” from Brandi.

Because of the way one’s marriage ended and the other’s started, and because there are two kids caught in the middle and lots of media attention involved, these two have been going at it on Twitter for months.

There’s no point in singling out one particular tweet to explain why they’re at number 5, as neither is there in taking sides. Suffice it to say that Brandi and LeAnn should perhaps consider cutting down on the Twitter usage – at least for a while.

The same goes for singer Chris Brown who, just recently, unleashed an extremely nasty and foul-mouthed tirade against a comedienne who dared call him out for beating his on-and-off girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009.

You might think bygones are bygones, but Chris really took the joke at heart, going off on a vicious rant against the woman and saying things we wouldn’t dare reproduce anywhere, let alone here.

As a sign of remorse, Brown deleted his Twitter page for a while, and came back after the storm had passed.

Lindsay Lohan lands in at number 3: in 2012, she used Twitter for a variety of purposes, Yahoo! points out, including dishing advice on how to stop projecting negativity by refusing to focus on Superstorm Sandy, which she creatively renamed “sally.”

“In September, she went on a bizarre tweet-a-thon, during which she sent out her prayers to Prince Harry, praised Chris Brown at the VMAs, asked the President to lower taxes for millionaires on Forbes’ list, and targeted fellow hot mess Amanda Bynes with ‘Why did I get put in jail and a nickelodeon star has had NO punishment(s) so far?’” the publication writes.

All’s been quiet on the Lohan Twitter front ever since she got into some serious trouble with the IRS and she’s literally buried in debt.

If there’s any consolation for her, Amanda Bynes too earned a place on the list, above Lindsay. She too tweeted the President of the United States, albeit for a more selfish purpose.

“Hey @BarackObama... I don't drink. Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don't hit and run. The end,” she wrote after her second DUI arrest. Obama was reportedly busy elsewhere because he never got back to her, so it’s safe to assume the cop still has his job.

At number 1, we find none other than the reality television queen herself, Kim Kardashian.

“You wouldn’t expect someone who owns a boutique called Khaos and a makeup line named Khrome to really know how to spell. And Kim Kardashian proved that on November 19 when she described her dinner to her 16 million followers as ‘#spinach #avacado #pear #apples #yogart’ – getting only three of the five actually right. (Does she not have spellcheck?)” Yahoo! writes.

“Just three days earlier, she caused a ‘kommotion’ when she tweeted she was ‘Praying for everyone in Israel,’ angering people for seeming ‘anti-Palestine.’ She quickly deleted the offending post, but later explained, ‘regardless of religion and political beliefs, there are countless innocent people involved who didn’t choose this, and I pray for all of them and also for a resolution’,” says the same media outlet.

The other entries in the list are Donald Trump, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rob Kardashian, Spike Lee and Daniel Tosh.
