StuntRally, a free and open source racing game that features over 150 tracks and lots of cars, has been promoted to version 2.5 and is now available for download.

StuntRally is the only game of its kind that's still maintained and developed on the Linux platform. Not only that, but it's also one of the more complex open source games ever made and it's built with numerous technologies, including Vdrift, bullet, OGRE, PagedGeometry, and MyGUI. This is actually a very big title and other companies would probably charge a hefty sum in order to sell it.

The game has been available for quite some time and it's still maintained and updated on a regular basis. It has quite a following and the community is very dedicated. Many of the changes made to the game are usually requested by players, and the devs are quick to implement all the important modifications.

StuntRally could be an expensive game, but it's free

The users of StuntRally will find that there are now 167 tracks, a few new scenarios (Surreal, Stone, Space, Alien, BlackDesert), and the total number of hours playable has increased considerably, not to mention the fact that the game also comes with a very useful and powerful track editor that lets players build their own races.

"The game features 167 tracks in 34 sceneries, 19 cars, and 4 vehicles. Game modes include: Single Race, Tutorials, Championships, Challenges, Multiplayer and Split Screen. Also Replays and Ghost drive are present. The Track Editor allows creating and modifying tracks. Both run on GNU/Linux and Windows. The game aims at a rally style of driving (like in Richard Burns Rally), with possible stunt elements (jumps, loops, pipes) and uses a 3D spline generated road," reads the official announcement.

The developers have corrected some issues with ATI/AMD Radeon cards, they have made some small modifications to the GUI, new challenges and championships have been added, and a lot of smaller fixes have been implemented.

Users can easily install the application, either by compiling the source package or by using a third-party repository (for Ubuntu users). Just enter these commands in a terminal and make sure you have root:

code
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu trusty-getdeb games" >/etc/apt/sources.list.d/playdeb.list'
wget -q -O- http://archive.getdeb.net/getdeb-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install stuntrally
Wait for all the packages to arrive and just start the game.
