Carl Zeiss does it again. After signing partnerships with some other heavy names in the optical devices industry, they decided to look closer into the medical field or wherever some might need microscopes.

This is not Carl Zeiss SMT's first attempt to revolutionize the way we view the world. The giant company has recently developed what appears to be a next-generation microscopy tool that is able to see things never before
visible.

As aliscorporation reports, this is nevertheless an advanced step in physics as electron microscopy "have been few and far between since the mid-1960s, and scanning electron microscopes are near their practical performance limits".

Not to mention it promises a new era in sub-nanometer, ultra-high resolution scanning microscopy. Probably the beginning of a nano gadgets era, who knows. Carl Zeiss SMT developed the new microscopy tool based on the Orion helium ion source. The microscope uses a beam of helium ions to provide significantly higher resolution images than the ones that were commonly used in electron microscopes.

[IMG=2]What's really cool about this micro is the fact that the ORION helium ion beam is said to be "the brightest illumination source ever created by man", mainly because it originates from a region less than one angstrom (0.1 nanometers) in size.

According to Gizmag: "The use of helium ions instead of electrons or other alternatives also provides other benefits, including a high secondary electron yield, and less sample damage. The images provide detailed information on the samples' topographic, material, crystallographic, and electrical properties."

The nano technology gadget is said to be so cool that the ORION microscope has already been installed at the U.S. National Institute for Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg. This makes me wonder weather the new technology is going to serve the right causes exclusively, or the evil cold blooded ones, as well?
