During the Vienna Design Week, designer Julia Lohmann got a chance to show off her latest creations: stunning lamps made from kelp.

Apparently, these large seaweeds can do more than just give Asian cuisine its specific taste.

They can be cut with a laser and made to decorate indoor spaces, at the same time meeting lighting demands.

“Seaweed is an amazing material. We consume it almost every day – there are extracts of seaweed in toothpaste. But we hardly ever see the material itself, and I think there is a value in it that has not been fulfilled yet,” the designer said.

Tree Hugger explains that, in order to develop these lamps, Julia Lohmann took the laser-cut kelps and used them to dress up a rattan farm.

However, there are many who question for how long the average citizens can rely on these lamps to light up their homes before they simply start to degrade and fall apart.
