It seems that up to 38% of those who have picked up an iPad tablet from Apple are no longer interested in picking up another handheld gaming device, like the PlayStation Portable from Sony or the DS line up from Nintendo. This is rather bad news for the two console manufacturers, who are not yet ready to respond to the launch of the new Apple device.
The report is based on data obtained by a study from Resolve Market Research, which aimed to see how interested owners of an
iPad are of buying other devices. The study says that close to 50% of those asked will not buy a e-reader like the Kindle from Amazon because of the iPad. 38 percent of respondents are saying that they are not interested in a new handheld and another 27% of those who are now Apple customers are not even interested in getting a new home console, like the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 or the Nintendo Wii.
The report also shows that 60 percent of iPad users believe that other platforms are better for gaming on the go than the device and a third of those who plan on getting the tablet do not own another device from Apple.
Both Sony and
Nintendo are claiming that the iPhone and the iPad do not have a big impact on their handheld platforms but both are probably worried when they read figures like those offered above. At the moment Nintendo is working on the 3DS, a new device that will allow gamers to experience full three dimensional games without using any special glasses. This ability will be unique when the console launches, in late 2010 or early next year, and will likely attract all those who are interested in getting primarily a gaming device, with the iPad attracting customers who are more attracted to reading and Internet browsing.
