22 students in the Netherlands have recently finished work on what they claim to be the world's first solar-powered family car.

The vehicle, dubbed “Stella,” is surprisingly light and energy-efficient, Inhabitat reports. It can accommodate up to four passengers at a time.

What's interesting is that, under normal circumstances, Stella generates more energy than it needs to move about. This excess energy can be stored and later fed into a power grid.

The students who worked on designing and manufacturing this car are confident that Stella will help them win this year's World Solar Challenge between October 6 – 13.

The World Solar Challenge is a race that takes place once every two years in the Australian Outback.

During this competition, solar-powered cars race one another, each hoping to be the first to complete the 1,875-mile-long (over 3,000 kilometers) course.
