The University of California, Los Angeles, is one of the most popular universities in the entire world because it has the largest enrollment of any university in the state.

The university's endowments are really remarkable, containing a powerful database that includes students' information, teachers' and staff's and other vital information of the university.

Today, UCLA announced that the database was breached by an attacker that can view information about 800.000 people. It seems like all the information was viewed by the hacker but no detail about a possible abuse is available yet.

UCLA representatives said that details about names, social security numbers, dates of birth, home addresses and contact information were breached but no driver license number, credit card or bank information.

"Ensuring data security is one of the most important responsibilities we have to the campus community, and in recent years we have significantly strengthened our information security practices in response to increasing attacks. In spite of our diligence, a sophisticated hacker found and exploited a subtle vulnerability in one of hundreds of applications.

We deeply regret the concern and inconvenience caused by this illegal activity. We have reconstructed and protected the compromised database and launched a comprehensive review of all computer security measures to accelerate systematic enhancements that were already in progress," said Jim Davis, UCLA's chief information officer and associate vice chancellor-Information Technology.

It seems like UCLA blocked access to the Social Security numbers and the database on November 21 when the university identified a suspicious activity in the computers located in the building. UCLA sustained that FBI was also announced so everybody hopes that the attacker will be soon identified.
