A 21-year-old student from Hofstra University on Long Island has been killed in a police shooting in Uniondale after a robbery, sources say.

Andrea Rebello of Tarrytown was home when an armed robber broke in, at her 213 California Avenue address, Christian Post details.

According to Nassau County Deputy Inspector Kenneth Lack, a man wearing a ski mask got inside the house at 2.30 a.m.

Rebello was not alone, three other people were there. Her twin sister, a man and another woman were also inside, and none were injured.

After the intruder entered the residence he held them at gunpoint, but twin Jessica managed to escape and call 911.

It was after police arrived to the house, some 10 minutes later, that a shooting took place. No rounds had been fired before the confrontation between the suspect and police officers.

"Shortly after our arrival, there was a police-involved shooting which takes place in the home. In that shooting, the suspect is killed and also one victim is killed," Lack informs.

Both the victim and the suspect died in the standoff. There is no indication of who fired the fatal shots as of yet.

"We are getting to the bottom of exactly what happened. We owe it to the family," Lack adds.

Witness Victoria Dehel, 20, living in a house located near Rebello's, reported hearing Rebello asking the robber to spare her life.

"I heard people fighting. They were screaming; one girl it sounded like she was pleading for her life, it was really scary," Dehel recalls.

"We heard the yelling and then five loud bangs. [...] It sounded like a college girl …. It sounded like she was fighting for her life," she describes, according to the NY Daily News.

“After the shots, I heard people yelling. [...] It was alarming,” next-door neighbor Katherine Parker, 27, notes.
