Potential victims are threatened that their payments will be canceled

Cybercriminals are trying to dupe unsuspecting students into handing over sensitive information with the aid of a cleverly designed phishing campaign that warns recipients that their student loan payments have been cancelled.

“This is a message for all students receiving grants and loans from the Students Loan Company. You are required to verify your account information in order to avoid any delay in your loan/grant payments. Do this here now by visiting [Link],” the message, provided by Hoax Slayer, reads.

Those who click on the link are taken to a website where they’re asked to provide customer reference numbers, passwords, secret questions and their answers, email addresses, dates of birth, credit card details, and more.

To make everything more legitimate-looking, the fraudsters have placed a Directgov logo on the malicious website.

We advise students to be on the lookout for such emails. Student Finance England doesn’t cancel payments without a good reason and they surely don’t ask students to provide such information.
