Neocore Games, the developer of King Arthur, has announced details related to how Strongholds will be implemented in the videogame and how they will influence the strategies that players will employ in what its representatives call the first role playing wargame.

King Arthur combines a strategic overall map depicting Britannia in the mythical times of the titular king and his knights with a tactical view for the battles, similar to that employed in the Total War series. Strongholds are the grand cities and fortresses of the game, at the same centers for civilization development in troubled times and on massive battlefields where the most important engagements of the campaigns are set to take place.

King Arthur will only support a limited number of the big cities on any map, with the justification being that they were initially built by the kings of ancient times and the mortals now can only rebuild them and not create new ones.

Strongholds need to be specialized, with some better suited to support education, some better off as religious centers and others built up in order to train more and more powerful heroes. In order to support a great empire, players will also need to transform some into economic powerhouses. The tactical engagements for the control of Strongholds are set to focus on the player capturing key locations, like cathedrals, fortifications and civic centers. King Arthur, set to initially be delivered via digital distribution, will be combining traditional medieval type battles with mystical heroes and spells. Players can recruit the Knights of the Round Table and then need to actually give them lands and possession in order to keep them happy and away from any thought of betrayal. There will also be artifacts to be found and hordes of creatures to be defeated as players battle to dominate Britannia.
