The upcoming Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition remake from Beamdog will arrive with plenty of downloadable content, according to its creators, and gamers can expect to see a number of new characters, with their own storylines and backgrounds, as well as new areas to explore and new mysteries to solve.

Trent Oster, the man leading Beamdog and development on the Baldur’s Gate remake, said via Twitter that, “We’ll be doing free feature improvements and existing content improvements as we go, but we are also planning some paid DLC. We would never DLC existing content. Any DLC content we plan to sell will be all new.”

The executive is aware of how DLC has been viewed by big publishers, like an easy way to make more money by simply offering them a number of items and equipment with limited use, and says that Beamdog has another vision linked to the content it will deliver.

Speaking about downloadable content in general, he added that, “The big guys have overcooked the term with badness” and then explained that “Our distribution plan is sell through Beamdog and provide an updater/launcher so we can push new updates easily. No player required”.

Baldur’s Gate was one of the defining top-down role-playing experiences of the ‘90’s and created a deep story, solid Dungeons & Dragons based mechanics and interesting characters.

The game got a full sequel from the same development team and since then BioWare has also claimed that the first Dragon Age title was a spiritual successor.

The Enhanced Edition remake for Baldur’s Gate will be launched on the PC, on tablets and on Mac systems before the summer is over.

Depending on how the game does in terms of criticism and sales Beamdog plans to also begin work on a full Baldur’s Gate 3, using the same setting and many recurring characters.
