New tactics, same old virus

The hackers that have initially created Storm, a powerful trojan-type bot are continuing to use it, but since the old tactics... well... they were old, the hackers decided to change them to achieve more effectiveness.

What the initial Storm virus did was spam all the time - the users usually received a postcard on their e-mails and when they clicked a link - wham! their computers got it right between the eyes, they were infected. When being plagued by such a virus, your machine becomes a member of a botnet and starts sending even more spam e-mails (by itself) to other users, which might catch the virus as well and in their turn send more and more spam messages.

The new tactic is similar as a way of functioning but now, they are making sure everyone gets the virus. When the user clicks on the link in that e-mail it is possible to get the trojan, but if he has all the latest security updates, he will be immune to it unless he downloads it by himself, overriding the anti-virus' warnings. As The Register informs us, when the user reaches the malicious website, he receives a message that a new Microsoft update is available, and if he decides to download that file he will get infected no matter what patches he has installed. Well, this is yet another great part of having Linux!

And of course, after getting the new virus that is called Zhelatin-gg, which is the same thing as Storm, guess what your PC is going to do! Yep, spam all day long! So please be more careful, Windows has its own automatic-update feature that prompts you every time you start a new session on you PC with the latest updates, if there are any.
