Finally possible with programs such as iPhoneDrive...

One of the most annoying limitations of the iPhone is the fact that you cannot use it as a storage device to move data around from one place to another. The iPhone has more than enough memory to let you carry around important documents that you might need with you but it refuses to be used as a disk. Fortunately, like with a lot of things, this can be remedied through third party software.

Though not technically a hack, Ecamm Network's recently released iPhoneDrive for Mac will let the iPhone be used as a file storage device. iPhoneDrive features drag and drop, making it very easy to copy entire folders to and from the iPhone with a single drag. This lets you carry files between work and home, back up important data, as well as keep useful apps and installers with you at all times.

"iPhoneDrive is the first Mac application targeted specifically towards the iPhone, and the only way to use it to store files. We've added one more use to an already very useful device," says Ken Aspeslagh, Ecamm Network's iPhone specialist, in the press release.

Though it is likely that Apple itself will enable such functionality in the future via a software update, those who need it here and now have this choice. It is important to note that although iPhoneDrive will let you carry documents and applications around, these will not be accessible directly from the iPhone itself and can only be used or accessed when the device is connected to a computer. In effect, it allows you to use the iPhone as memory stick, nothing more.

This is one of the first practical programs written for alternative iPhone use. While most are concentrating on unlikely tasks such as unlocking the iPhone, it is programs such as this that actually increase the value of the device.
