While the default number of items which a Jump List in Windows 7 is 10, Microsoft provides users with the possibility to increase this value.

However, it appears that those customers that went over the top with the volume of items in a particular Jump List managed to lose the feature altogether.

According to the Redmond company, customers that added some 1,000 items to the Jump List of an application have not been able to access it any longer.

“On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the Jump List of an application disappears permanently when you use the application to open or save a new item. This issue occurs when there are 999 items in the Jump List already,” the software giant explained.

Jump Lists are the equivalent of mini-Start Menus, that can be accessed by right-clicking items pinned to the Windows 7 Taskbar. Depending on the Windows 7 optimizations that developers have done for their applications, Jump Lists can be either basic, or quite complex and useful.

Microsoft is limiting the number of Jump List items that can be displayed to 99, a value which is under the control of the user.

It’s hard to think about scenarios in which Jump Lists would need to grow to such a size, but apparently there are users that added in excess of 999 items.

Both Windows 7 and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), as well as their server counterparts are affected, the software giant explained.

Microsoft worked on a fix for this problem, and released and update for Windows 7 SP1 and RTM. Users that have experienced problems can head over to the Microsoft Download Center and grab the fix.
