Plenty of the world’s cities are being recreated using 3D graphics for Google Maps and Google Earth. Google’s efforts combined with those of skilled and passionate volunteers have been paying off and more and more towns and cities can be explored in three dimensions from the comfort of your chair. The latest to be added to the list is Stockholm, Sweden’ capital and the largest city in the country.

“Stockholm, which is said to be referred to as the 'Venice of the North' may not receive a lot of sunlight throughout the year, but today it’s in the limelight as the newest city to be included in the 3D Buildings layer of Google Earth,” Bruce Polderman, product manager at Google, wrote.

“Stockholm is a unique geographic location - filled with historic bridges, buildings, and parks. The rich architectural history make[s] it a fulfilling destination for the virtual tourist,” he added.

Stockholm is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region with over one million visitors each year. It’s also a city with a rich history, having been founded at around 1250, so its architecture is a mix of old, even medieval, and modern buildings.

Google kindly put together a video to showcase the 3D models in the city, but the best way to enjoy it is by using Google Earth and traveling to its location. You can also use the newly launched Google Earth view in Google Maps if you don’t have Earth installed. And if you spot something missing, or you think you can do better, you can jump in and create your own models employing either Google Building Maker or the full-fledged Google SketchUp 3D-modeling tool.
