Ever since he’s been hired as judge on American Idol, Steven Tyler has been getting nothing but positive reviews, with countless fans noting that they don’t even know how come the show made it so far without him on board. A taste of Steven’s awesomeness also comes with the latest People issue.

The rocker is featured in this week’s People issue – and the interview he gives is just what one would expect from him.

For instance, he says he hasn’t touched drugs in years but, these days, he doesn’t even need illegal substances to get high because he can very well do that by simply being on American Idol.

“If you think going out in front of high-def cameras and millions of people I’m not high on adrenaline, you’re crazy,” the rock star tells People.

“I’m stoned when that curtain drops. I just don’t snort the curtain dropping. I don’t snort J. Lo either, though I do breathe her in,” Steven adds with his typical sense of humor.

On a more serious note, the 63-year-old rocker admits he’s “grateful” to be finally free of drugs, especially since he knew he was headed for the worst.

“Left up to my own devices, I probably would have been dead several times over,” he puts it bluntly.

Tyler is also featured in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine where, among other things, he reveals he took up the offer for American Idol so that he could prove his band, Aerosmith, that he was no longer their “hostage.”

“Did I take this job to show the band? [Expletive], yeah. Not to show them, but that I can’t be held hostage anymore. I will be my own hostage. The band can’t throw me out,” Tyler says (quotes via TMZ).

He also says producers also talked with Roger Daltrey of The Who for the job, but eventually chose Tyler because Daltrey no longer had “that sort of rock & roll charm.”
