If producers saw fit to apologize to viewers when Steven Tyler only mouthed an obscenity at a contestant on American Idol, one can only imagine what they’ll do now. The judge dropped the F-bomb during the latest live show.

After Casey Abrams’ performance of Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” which ended on a high note with a kiss on the cheek of Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler got a bit overexcited over the performance – and may have offended.

After JLo’s comments on Abrams’ performance came Steven’s turn. As he promised a while back, in an older interview, when he’d see a “[expletive]-ing good” contestant, he’ll say so.

“There [are] millions of people in America that are really angry, because you [expletive] them off because you’re so [expletive]-ing good!” Tyler enthused, as his fellow judges got up from their chairs to stop him from saying more.

He wouldn’t stop, though, and Randy Jackson’s correction that Abrams’ performance had been “darn good” came a bit too late.

But there was more going on than you can see in the video below, EW notes. For starters, people’s reaction proved that this was actually the first time that Tyler let one slip and that the previous times he’d been bleeped were “false alarms.”

One shot of executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, standing with his hands in his hair for half a minute, was enough to confirm that.

“Eventually he, Fox reality TV head Mike Darnell, and Fox TV chairman Peter Rice, the big boss man himself, made their way over to the judges table, practically surrounding Steven. But everyone was, at least outwardly, all smiles,” EW says.

“Rice and Tyler even hugged it out, although Rice did then appear to have a more serious conversation with Tyler while a make-up artist touched up the lip marks on his left cheek. (Tyler‘s left cheek, I mean.)” adds the e-zine.

Things were considered settled when Nigel came back with a piece of duck tape, which he placed on Steven’s lips, in a bid that he will be prevented from uttering more obscenities on American Idol.
