Iconic rocker and American Idol judge Steven Tyler is finding himself under heavy fire after his rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” over the weekend. You can see it in full above.

Looking ever the rock god, Tyler sang the National Anthem at the New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens game for the AFC Championship.

It's not just the players that got confused by his rendition of it, the media did too. He was basically ripped to pieces in later written reviews of his performance.

However, his fans argue, saying Tyler “butchered” the Anthem means contracting him to sing it and then expect him to do it differently than he would any other song.

In other words, Steven Tyler sang the National Anthem just like you'd expect Steven Tyler to sing the National Anthem – and there's really nothing wrong with that because he dared to be different and stand out from the crowd.

Then again, it could be that reaction to his performance is entirely dependent on personal taste – the viewer's, that is.
