“Father of the Bride” is to weddings what “Home Alone” is to Christmas. If you plan on getting married, chances are that someone, somewhere is going to make you watch this movie or its sequel “Father of the Bride 2.”

In these movies, Steve Martin portrayed a troubled father who somehow always got into trouble right before the big event, and hilarity ensued. Diane Keaton played his wife when the fist movie came out 23 years ago, back in 1991. Now reports are claiming that the two have already signed up on a sequel.

The news comes from NikkiFinke.com, where the entertainment editor reveals that not only the main actors were thrilled to return to the project, but also the original director of the movie, Charles Shyer, who also acted as co-writer on the production.

The report claims that this time around, the script writers are focusing their attention on a gay wedding, trying to bring the action into the twenty first century. For those who remember, George and Nina Banks, the characters played by Martin and Keaton, had a son named Matty, played by Kieran Culkin in the first two movies.

The writers are now focusing their attention on little Matty who is 29 at the moment and also apparently in love with the son of a US Navy Seal. The plot kicks off with George finding out his son is getting married to another man and is “thunderstruck and speechless.”

It doesn't take a genius to figure out where things are headed from here. Nina gets mad with George and his Old-World views, and she promptly kicks him out of the house. When the script was pitched to Disney, the studio's execs loved the idea.

An insider is quoted as saying that the concept came in a “timely” fashion. “I told Charles I just hope it goes forward before gays stop trending,” adds the insider, taking some of the credit for the idea. Since the project can now be considered greenlit, Shyer is said to have started work on writing the whole script, along with Marc Klein, while David Boberman is going to act as producer again.

The attention of the public now turns to Kieran Culkin, the actor who played Matty in the original. Ideally, he too will be convinced to make a return and then the entire cast will be reunited for the third part of the franchise.
