Apple’s CEO has confirmed that Apple is working on a fix for iPhone 3G customers experiencing poor performance after applying the iOS 4.1 software update.

Following complaints from iPhone 3G users accusing issues after installing iOS 4, Apple kicked off an investigation telling the press that it was aware of these issues, and that it was looking into ways to solve them.

Particularly, according to a Digits report published in July, Apple was investigating reports saying iOS 4 was causing problems for users of the iPhone 3G.

An Apple spokesperson reportedly said that the company was aware of these reports and that it was looking into the matter.

In the meanwhile, Apple released iOS software updates resolving several problems, although this issue remains to be addressed.

Now, a customer who claims to have been patiently waiting for Apple to come up with a fix has asked the company’s CEO for clarification - is this, or isn’t this going to be fixed by Apple?

“I've waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again,” this person said, according to a report by MacRumors.

The email reportedly came in response to expressed frustration over the performance of his iPhone 3G.

The customer called it "dog slow", and pointed to problems with system responsiveness when scrolling, zooming, and typing, after applying iOS 4.

“I've read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I'm not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple,” the user reportedly told Jobs.

Apple’s CEO replied with a typically terse message:

“Software update coming soon.

Sent from my iPhone”

iOS 4.1 beta builds are currently being tested by Apple’s developer community, making this version the most likely to launcg soon, packing the necessary fix.
