At this year's Global Mobile Awards, hosted at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) show in Barcelona, Apple CEO Steven P. Jobs has been given the Mobile Personality of the Year award. The nominees were Eric Schmidt, chairman of the board and CEO, Google Inc.; Mike Lazaridis, Co-CEO, Research In Motion; Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO, Apple Inc.; Pete Chou, CEO, HTC.

Created to mark the 15th anniversary of the Global Mobile Awards, the special award "reflects the contributions of individuals, established names, new thinkers, and rising starts, across the global industry and leaders of other industries that have contributed to the growth and convergence of mobile during the last year."

The people at Macworld report that, "Steve Jobs did not turn up to personally collect the award, and nobody from Apple collected the award on his behalf." It was actually Stephen Fry, the host of the Global Mobile Awards, who accepted it and said he would pass it on to Jobs.

Stephen Fry had earlier referred to Apple as "the elephant in the room." Earlier in the awards ceremony, he expressed deep admiration towards the company, saying, "Apple's success insomuch as it inspires others. It causes the whole ecosphere to adapt, adopt, and excel."

Fry also took the liberty to talk about Apple’s CEO a bit, outlining his career in three acts, and recounting a story about how Jobs was supposed to meet Tim Berniers Lee, who developed HTML on a Next computer. Fry noted that, "He [Jobs] still hasn't met him today. That these two men who changed the world came that close to each other and never met is remarkable."

Finally, Macworld informs, Stephen Fry said Steve Jobs couldn’t make it to the awards ceremony because "he's busy working on Apple's next big thing the iDiaper," joking at the company’s expense.
