Apple is saddened to inform that Steve Jobs, the company’s visionary and co-founder, has passed away at age 56.

The company's board of directors made the news official by posting an obituary and a photo of Jobs on the main page of its web site with the message:

“Steve Jobs: 1955 - 2011.
Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve Leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Apple has opened an inbox for those who would like to share their thoughts, memories, and condolences at rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Probably mundane to say, his contribution was undoubted. Even by his strongest competitors. One of the brightest minds in the industry. Rest in piece big guy.

I've been in many tech sites and have read all the news regarding his death, it was a very sad moment in the IT world :(
