Steve Ballmer will leave Microsoft within the next 12 months, as soon as a new CEO is found, but the search for someone who could get the company back on track continues.

Richard Gibbons, Microsoft reseller Bechtle's software manager, told CRN that whoever comes after Ballmer needs to be at least a decent replacement.

In addition, Gibbons explained that Ballmer was often criticized for analysts, mostly because a lot of people didn’t like him, no matter the way the company performed.

“A lot of analysts don't seem to like him, and it doesn't matter how much more Microsoft sells, for example, they will say it would be better if he was not there. Going forward, it makes sense to have a new CEO for what is almost a new company. Ultimately, it will be good for Microsoft if it can get a decent replacement,” the analyst said.

Ballmer, on the other hand, doesn’t talk too much on his departure, saying he will remain within the company to ensure a successful transition.
