Microsoft will unveil the new Windows 8 and the Surface tablet at the end of the month, but the company’s CEO Steve Ballmer flashed the new device during a private event in San Francisco.

Not much is known about the Surface tablet, except for the fact that it will run Windows 8, but Ballmer hinted in September that it would cost between $300 and $800.

This time however, Ballmer attended the conference with a Surface as his personal device, but acted carefully all the time to hide the tablet’s front fascia from the audience. He did reveal the back of the tablet, as you can see in this photo published by Wired, but nobody was actually allowed to hold it.

In fact, one lucky developer in the front row had the chance to feel the… uhm… smell of the tablet, as Ballmer threw him a Touch Cover.
