A remake of the steampunk shooter Steel Empire is launching in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming console at the end of the month and will also make the jump to North America later this year.

Steel Empire is an old Mega Drive / Genesis horizontal scrolling shooter based in a steampunk universe that bears some similarities to the famous Hayao Miyazaki animated film “Laputa: Castle in the Sky.”

It attracted a lot of attention from the gaming community with its distinctive visual style as well as with its engaging gameplay, and it also got a Game Boy Advance port a while back.

But the Nintendo 3DS seems to be the go-to device as far as retro gaming is concerned, thanks to its Virtual Console feature, and the remake of Steel Empire will surely please its old fans.

Publisher Starfish SD has also revealed some of the improvements that Mebius Games' creation will receive before landing on the Nintendo 3DS, such as 3D depth and effects and the use of the second screen as a sort of status monitor showing health, score, level and more.

There is currently no word regarding a European release of Steel Empire, but the title will hit the American eShop later this summer.
